At Midnight in the Garden of the Gods

Mournful howls split the night, jolting Kay Price out of her meditative trance. She muttered an imprecation, placing a hand against her chest to still the pounding of her heart.

It sounded like a pack of wolves just outside her bedroom window, but she knew better. There weren’t any here in Colorado Springs—it was just the dogs next door, howling at the moon. And it seemed as if every time she tried magick lately, they let loose. She’d been told animals could sense the energies, but this was ridiculous. Her ritual was ruined now. At this rate, she’d never find her spirit guide.

Resigned to the inevitable, Kay concluded the ritual then opened the circle, feeling a little clumsy. She was new at this, but ever since she had taken the local Wicca 101 class, she knew she had found her spiritual path in life. Unlike other belief systems she had tried, Wicca allowed her to tailor her life and environment in creative ways to develop her own personal path for improvement in harmony with nature. Since her job as a CPA in the corporate world left her feeling stressed and very unharmonious with nature, the Wiccan principles resonated deep within her, filling a need she hadn’t known she had.

Unfortunately, it was proving harder than she’d expected to practice. She gazed out the window at the moon, looking for answers in its pale, serene face. She certainly hadn’t gotten any answers through meditation, though the Goddess knew she had tried hard enough.

And her question wasn’t all that difficult, either. Though it wasn’t required of a novice witch, Kay felt as if she needed a specific deity or animal totem, one of the many aspects of the Goddess, to work with. Her teacher, Shardae, was very patient and helpful, but Kay wanted to progress to the next level, to work with a personal guide of her own on the spiritual plane. And, seeing how Shardae’s bear totem gave her strength, purpose, and—most of all—focus, Kay yearned to have the same for herself.

But a study of potential patron deities and spirit guides had left her nothing but confused. It wasn’t that she didn’t find any of them interesting—the problem was that they were all intriguing and she just couldn’t decide which was best for her.

Shardae had suggested a number of methods to find her guide, but it was harder than Kay had imagined. Magick wasn’t as clear-cut as the numbers and accounting methods she dealt with as a CPA. Magick was fuzzy, nebulous, and at times, frustrating. Especially tonight.

She sighed, realizing she still needed assistance. Maybe Shardae could help when they met tomorrow.
